Beginning Crochet
When you are beginning to crochet it can seem a bit overwhelming. Don't worry, with a little patience and practice, you will be an expert in no time! Remember, it takes time to gain a new talent.
To begin learning how to crochet, I went to the store, bought a beginning crochet book, a hook, and a skein of yarn. Then I went home and read the directions, became utterly confused, and put it down for a week. The lesson for that week - don’t try to swallow the elephant whole! See, I wanted to begin crocheting by making a queen size one piece afghan.
Not the right place to start!
The next week, I went back, bought a book on dishcloths for beginning crocheters. If you are beginning to learn crochet, do yourself a favor by starting with a bite of the elephant. Begin with something small like a dishcloth.
Actually, don’t start with a dishcloth, YET. If you are in the beginning stage of learning crochet, you want to read The Official Guide to Crochet first.. This is an excellent crocheting guide that will teach you in more detail the techniques (stitches) for crocheting. You will want to learn how to read the pattern and work the stitches before you try to make anything. Then you will be on the road to success, not utterly confused!
To help you get started we have created three dishcloth patterns specifically for beginning crocheters. They give you a chance to practice beginning stitches like, single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet. These are stitches you will use in some combination for future projects. Feel free to print them off for easier reading!
We recommend using our dishcloth patterns for practicing. We will be adding more beginning level crochet patterns every few weeks, so be sure to check back for more projects.
